Fire and emergency safety training
The Australian Government recently passed the
Occupational Health & Safety
Act 2004. Amongst other things it requires all businesses, regardless
of size, the need to put into place procedures that safeguard
all people within the business premises and to:-
“provide such information, instruction, training or supervision
to employees of the employer as is
necessary to enable those persons to perform their work in a
way that is safe and
without risks to health”.( this extract from the act itself)
Penalties are imposed for non-compliance. However,
one concern that is not widely publicised is the potential of
litigation, fines and even imprisonment against a business,
its management and even it’s staff, should an unforeseen
emergency incident or fire eventuate in injury or death. Compliance
with this new law helps to identify and resolve potential safety
issues and provides a system that best endeavors to secure the
safety of personnel and duty of care.
Another consequence that should concern businesses
that have not fulfilled their legal obligations and a catastrophic
result ensues, is the potential of providing their insurance
companies a legal loop hole which could potentially leave their
business exposed.
To comply with the legislation, businesses
need to utilise a qualified training company that will deliver
competency-based training at a nationally recognised standard
in Emergency procedures. Businesses that successfully undergo
this training will be issued with a registered training organisation
certificate. All businesses will need to undergo annual training
reviews and emergency evacuation drills to maintain their qualification.
If your business, company or place of work
has not complied with this legislation it is exposed to potential
and unnecessary risk.
